Crestone is a remarkable area if you are looking for land: homesites from one-third acre to three acres, as well as larger parcels and offerings of multiple contiguous lots. The Baca Grande, immediately south of the town of Crestone, directly under the majestic 14,000-foot peaks of the Sangre de Cristo range, was developed as a residential subdivision some thirty-four years ago. Thousands of lots were surveyed, platted, and equipped with such services as a water and sanitation district, underground power and phone lines, and some as off-the-grid lots offering opportunities to those wishing to build with a focus towards sustainability. But this development was doubtlessly ahead of its time. Few of the initial lot owners were willing to move to a remote and relatively undeveloped area of Colorado.
